AN AFTERNOON WITH BACH

Our Absolutely Romantic concert was very enjoyable and seemed to be well received by the good-sized audience. A highlight was Auf dem Strom for soprano, horn and piano.

Our last Sunday concert for the year is an all-Bach programme performed by baroque specialists Greg Squire (violin), Katrin Eickhorst-Squire (cello) and Douglas Mews (harpsichord). Those of you who attended their Scaramuccia concert several years ago will know we're in for a treat. All three are founders of the New Zealand Baroque Soloists and appeared in the NBR New Zealand Opera's production of Handel's Acis and Galatea in 2003, and the highly acclaimed performance of Bach's St John's Passion at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul's in 2005. All this, and the great Johann Sebastian as wellIrresistible.

Born in Wellington, Gregory Squire, began playing violin at age 11, and at 14 became a pupil of Auckland-based teacher Heather Smith. In 1975 he was awarded an Associated Board Scholarship to study with Jaroslav Vanecek at the Royal College of Music. He moved to Edinburgh where he lived for 16 years before returning to New Zealand in 1998 to take up a position in the first violins of the NZSO and join the teaching staff of Massey and Victoria Universities. In Edinburgh he was appointed Concertmaster of the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, with whom he regularly appeared as soloist, and where he developed a growing interest in and work with period instrument performance. He was co-director of the Scottish Early Music Consort, has performed concertos on the baroque violin, and has worked with ensembles throughout Europe as well as Joshua Rifkin's Boston-based Bach Ensemble. He has also conducted oratorios, operas and orchestras.

Katrin Eickhorst-Squire was born in Germany and played recorder and cello from an early age, gaining many prizes and awards before studying cello at the Musikochshcule in Hannover. She has given recitals throughout Germany, in Denmark, Austria and France and broadcast regularly in Germany. In 1983 she joined the Scottish Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal for five years before freelancing for 10 years. As regular continuo cellist for the Scottish Early Music Consort, she appeared in international festivals throughout the UK, and was in demand in other early music ensembles. As a recorder player, she performed as soloist and in ensembles, including Scaramuccia and the Scottish Early Music Consort.

Since arriving in New Zealand in 1998 with husband Greg and their twins, she has appeared regularly in chamber music concerts as continuo player, recitalist and soloist, and has broadcast on Concert FM. She is the Artist Teacher for recorder at the New Zealand School of Music and she has also taught baroque cello and string class at Massey University.

Douglas Mews Douglas Mews graduated from Auckland University in 1979 with a Masters degree in organ and harpsichord performance, and continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Holland with Bob van Asperen. He returned to New Zealand in 1984 where he led an active performing and accompanying schedule, returning back to Holland in 1993 to study fortepiano and give organ recitals. Since returning again to New Zealand he combines his position as keyboard specialist at the New Zealand School of Music with his post of choirmaster and organist at St Teresa's in Karori, and in 2005 was appointed Wellington City Organist - a position in which he gives regular organ recitals in the Wellington Town Hall. In addition to his busy recording and performance schedule, he appears in concert with soloists touring nationally for Chamber Music New Zealand and appears as a soloist for Concert FM.
