Two Threnodies for Flute and String Trio These two beautiful pieces, written in 1971, are in a
reflective mood. No 2 is written for the alto flute which further enhances
the nostalgic quality of the music. This is the most celebrated of Mozart's four flute quartets
and is particularly renowned for its Adagio in which the strings accompany the flute,
playing pizzicato throughout the entire movement. Although Hungarian composer Dohnnyi wrote this trio in
1902, it is firmly rooted in the 19th Century Romantic tradition of Brahms.
The work is full of folk melodies and the writing full and rich, making the three
instruments sound like a much larger ensemble.
