TRIO CON BRIO

Amici never fail to delight. Their culinary fare was great fun, including a change of role for cellist Alan Chisolm to narrator in The Baker's Tale (he did it very well). The Schubert Notturno was divine and the Dvorák piano quartet was played with energy and style.

Our next concert looks like it's from a group we don't know, but when you look closer, you realise two of its members have performed for us before. Trio Con Brio is made up of Martin and Victoria Jaenecke and Cheryl Grice-Watterson. Those of you who went to the NZ String Quartet last year will remember Victoria's fine viola playing, when she stepped in at a few days' notice to replace an indisposed Gillian Ansell. And Cheryl performed a solo concert for us a few years ago, delighting us with her guitar playing and her engaging stage presence.

Trio Con Brio describe themselves as a vibrant and versitile group of internationally experienced musicians who have all settled in the Tasman region of New Zealand and initially played in a concert during the Nelson Arts Festival 2002. The strength of the group lies in the colourful sounds made possible by combining their instruments in many different ways, as well as their stylistically wide repertoire.

We are therefore really looking to forward to this concert, where Cheryl and Victoria are joined by Victoria's husband.

Cheryl Grice-Watterson (Guitar): Acclaimed from an early age as a gifted performer, Cheryl won a scholarship at age sixteen to the Royal Manchester College of Music, and at twenty years was awarded the first ever Performers Distinction given to a guitarist at the College by John Williams. Cheryl embarked on a successful solo career, including winning prizes in international competitions, recording music lessons with Julian Bream for French television and many concerto and recital perfromances. In 1977 Cheryl immigrated to New Zealand with her family where she is now Head of Guitar at the Nelson School of Music. Committed to raising awareness of the classical guitar, Cheryl is an active teacher and performer in schools.

Martin Jaenecke (Violin): Born in Luebeck, Germany, Martin studied violin with Professor Rainer Kussmaul at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Freiburg, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1985. In 1986 he became a member of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he played violin for three years before changing to a viola position. During a years leave in 1990 Martin completed viola studies with Tabea Zimmerman and in 1991 with Vladimir Mendelssohn in Rotterdam. Martin's special love is playing chamber music and he was fortunate to study with members of the Quartetto Italiano, Alban Berg Quartet and Vienna String Sextet. Martin settled in Motueka with his wife Victoria and their two children in 2001. He is the Musical Director of the VIVA Chamber Orchestra in Nelson and an active performer in recital and chamber music concerts.

Victoria Jaenecke (Viola): Growing up Christchurch, Victoria began her viola studies with the late Elizabeth Rogers at the former Christchurch Conservatoire of Music. She completed a Bachelor of Music Degree in Brisbane in 1985 and played in the Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras before going to Germany in 1991. There she studied in Munich with Professor Harolf Schlichtig for two years. Since then she has played extensively in the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker and the Frankurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, returning to New Zealand in 2002. Victoria is a founding member of the VIVA Chamber Orchestra in Nelson and an active recitalist, chamber musician and freelance orchestral player.

Note the slight change to the programme from what is in our brochure in that the saxophone piece is replaced by the three Spanish dances for violin and guitar.
