TRIO VICTORIA

Trio Con Brio treated us to an afternoon of fine playing. An unusual combination, violin, viola and guitar. It made for a gentler sound than with piano. I was interested to learn that the guitar was very popular in Beethoven's time, and that many works were transcribed for guitar at that time.

Cheryl Grice-Watterson has a website now, and you can see what she and Trio Con Brio are up to (including her recordings). Her website is Cheryl Grice. If you don't have internet, and you would like to buy one of her CDs, you can do so by writing to PO Box 949, Nelson, New Zealand or by phoning (03) 548 7989.

This month we are delighted to welcome Trio Victoria. As we are expecting a good audience for this concert, we are preselling tickets as we have done for other popular concerts recently. In addition, our (recently introduced) practice of serving a complimentary glass of wine or orange juice during interval at one of the concerts during the year will occur at this concert.

Trio Victoria, formed by Thomas Hecht, Euan Murdoch and Wilma Smith, last performed for us in 2000. Thomas and Wilma have moved on to other things and so the group is now Diedre Irons on piano, Jan Tawroszewicz on violin (a change from the information on our brochure) and with Euan on cello as the founding member. What won't change is the quality of playing, and this year they are bringing us a delicious programme, including Tchaikovsky's magnificent (and not heard nearly enough) Piano Trio, often considered his best chamber work.

Diedre Irons, piano, Euan Murdoch, cello and Jan Tawroszewicz, violin, need little introduction to Kapiti audiences. Before Diedre moved to Wellington, she and Jan were two-thirds of the Canterbury Trio, which has played for us several times; and Euan has played in a number of groups, including in duo with Terence Dennis. It will be wonderful to hear them in this combination playing a great programme.

Diedre is currently Senior Lecturer, Head of Piano Studies at Victoria University. She has performed extensively in many countries as a soloist in concerti, as a recitalist, and as a member of renowned chamber music ensembles. Major projects during the past decade include performing the complete works for piano trio of Beethoven with the Canterbury Trio in 1995, the complete works of Brahms for piano and strings in 1995, and in 1996, Shostakovich's complete works for piano and strings in 1996.

Euan is Senior Lecturer, Programme Director and Head of String Studies at Victoria University. As a cellist and chamber musician, Euan Murdoch regularly performs with New Zealand's top artists and ensembles, as well as being a National recording artist with Concert FM.

Jan is lecturer in violin at Canterbury University. He has made appearances in most of the major musical centres in the Soviet Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, West Germany, France, Austria, Mexico, Rumania, Britain, Japan, Italy and Switzerland. In 1968 he became a member of the famous Warsaw Piano Quintet and he has also been leader of the Polish String Quartet. From 1971 to 1982 he was on the staff of the Academy of Music in Warsaw, teaching the violin and chamber music classes.
